Laser Tattoo Removal

Although tattoo trends come and go, the tattoo themselves last forever. Sometimes a once loved tattoo may become somewhat of an eyesore. What may have seemed like a good idea at one point in your life can often fall out of fashion and no longer suit. Luckily, due to modern technology, what was once permanent can now be erased! Laser tattoo removal is one of the most commonly performed procedures at Q Esthetics Laser Clinic. We effectively and safely remove tattoos of all sizes and colours, with the advanced Revlite and Picosure lasers.

The RevLite is a revolutionary Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser designed mainly for advanced tattoo removal. It features PhotoAcoustic Technology PulseTM or PTP. The RevLite SI exclusive PTP is a leading edge method of energy dispersion, which delivers narrow pulse widths at maximum power for efficient removal of unwanted tattoo pigment. Clinical studies have indicated that the PTP mode offers greater efficacy and increased patient comfort, than previous Q Switch technologies. The highly focused laser beam passes harmlessly through the outer layer of the skin, and is primarily absorbed by the tattoo ink.

PicoSure, the world’s first aesthetic picosecond laser at Q Esthetics in Toronto, is one of only a few of its kind in the GTA. PicoSure can remove all-colours of tattoo with a high degree of safety for every patient. PicoSure is a non-ablative technology that delivers the same dramatic results of ablative procedures, with none of the associated redness, burns or downtime. Because of its targeted action, fewer treatments are required. As laser light is absorbed, it is quickly converted to heat. The laser beam will be directed onto the tattoo, as the pulsed light penetrates the skin’s epidermal surface through to the inner dermis. The tattoo ink will absorb the energy from the laser and heat up. Once this energy is absorbed, the ink will fragment into extremely small particles before being carried away by the lymphatic system. There is minimal risk of scarring or skin damage with laser tattoo removal, as the laser targets only the tattoo dye itself.

What Kind of Tattoo Can be Removed?

A tattoo’s colour, depth, and chemical composition all affect how it responds to laser light; though the Q-YAG Laser Tattoo Removal works best on darker colours such as black, red, dark orange and dark blue. Lighter colours such as green, purple, brown, light orange and light blue can also be eliminated effectively, however may require more treatments. Does Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?

The laser light will selectively target the undesired ink or pigment while leaving the other tissues largely unaffected; therefore, most patients report only minor discomfort. Many people compare the sensation of the pulses entering the skin, to the quick snap of a rubber band; however, if such “snaps” make you feel uncomfortable, we may offer you topical anesthesia. Most patients have experienced only minimal discomfort during the laser tattoo removal procedure with the Q-YAG 5 laser and PicoSure laser. The application of a topical anesthetic can be discussed during your consultation.

What Happens After Laser Tattoo removal?

Immediately after exposure to the YAG 5 laser, the treated areas may be sensitive, may become whitish-coloured (which will subside in about 30 minutes) or “frosted”, and swell slightly. Swelling may last a little longer, but can be reduced by cooling the skin with an ice pack. The tattoo will fade over the next few weeks. There is little to no downtime related to laser tattoo removal. You should be able to return to work and resume regular activities immediately after the procedure. After each treatment, your skin may be red or feel sunburnt. Each patient’s personal experience of the side effects of treatment will vary. It is important to follow the recovery care instructions provided to you by our specialists, who will ensure that you know what to expect as you proceed through your treatments.

Laser Tattoo Removal F.A.Q. & Links

How long does laser tattoo removal take?
Depending on the size and location of the tattoo or lesion, treatment typically takes about 10 to 30 minutes. Some tattoos may completely fade after only one treatment, though most may require a multiple of four or more. Laser tattoo removal treatments are usually spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart, in order to give your body sufficient time to fully eliminate the loosened particles of tattoo ink or pigment. The number of sessions and required time between each session will depend on several factors; such as, the location of the tattoo, skin type and colour, types of inks and colours used, the depth of ink in the skin, the age of the tattoo, and general health of the patient. Complete tattoo removal usually requires 6 to 12 sessions.
Are there any side effects with laser tattoo removal?
Side effects are rare with laser tattoo removal treatment. When side effects such as increased sensitivity, hyperpigmentation, infection, and pinpoint bleeding do occur, they are usually mild and confined to the treated area. Slight swelling and heat may be expected over the area for the first two days, and a crust or blister may also form over the treated area (which will eventually disappear in the weeks following your treatment). The probability of these side effects occurring varies from person to person.
Are there any alternative treatments for tattoo removal?
If removing your tattoo is not preferred, it is possible to cover up an existing tattoo with another. If removal is preferred, there are other treatments such as dermabrasion, surgical skin excision, and skin graft procedures; however, these can be very complicated and painful. There are also topical creams and other solutions on the market that can be injected or applied to the surface of the skin, but are often ineffective and can pose dangerous risks. Whereas surgical excision is likely to leave a scar , laser tattoo removal is the only treatment where scarring is less likely.
