Kenalog Injections

In the cosmetic world, Kenalog is often called a steroid injection and is mentioned related to scar treatments and other conditions. Kenalog injections contain the active ingredient triamcinolone, which is a type of medicine called a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are hormones which are naturally made by our adrenal glands.

Kenalog Injections

They have many important functions in the body including control of inflammatory responses. Kenalog works by decreasing the body’s immune response to reduce symptoms such as swelling. Kenalog injections are commonly used intradermally to treat skin lesions such as keloid scarring or deep cystic acne lesions*. This medication has other uses such as for the treatment of allergies, (allergic rhinitis), inflammatory or allergic skin disorders, Rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, autoimmune diseases like Lupus, and various cancers among other conditions. This multi-use medication also has many applications in cosmetic medicine.

What is a keloid?
Keloid is a type of scar typically characterized by tissue overgrowth often in the form of a smooth raised area that is pink or purple in colour. During the wound-healing process, fibroblasts (a type of cell in our connective tissue) synthesizes the protein collagen, to stimulate the wound healing process. In the case of keloids, the fibroblasts produce far more collagen than what is typically needed, and the scar continues to grow beyond the area of the original wound. Keloid or Hypertrophic scars are often red, itchy and raised, and can be sensitive to touch and irritated when touched by clothing. Hypertrophic scars are temporarily inflamed, and may respond well to other treatments such as silicone gel or sheeting. While they will usually resolve and lighten over time, Keloids will expand over time and do not tend to respond well to conventional scar treatments.

Who gets them?
Anyone can get a keloid scar. Though according to the National Institute of Health (NIH), they most commonly develop in people between 10 and 20 years of age, and of African American, Asian, or Hispanic descent. There also appears to be a genetic predisposition, whereas, if it runs in your family there is an increased risk. You may know if you are prone to keloid scarring if you have developed any in the past. This is helpful knowledge if you are planning any surgical procedures.

Why do they occur?
Any skin trauma can cause a keloid; such as, piercings, acne, puncture wounds, scratches or surgical scarring. Certain areas of the body are more prone to scarring in general, such as areas over joints/bone and where there is high tension on wound closure.

Treatment
Keloids don’t usually resolve when left untreated and have a very high recurrence rate. A combination therapy of Kenalog injections and laser scar removal is the preferred treatment option at Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, and has been shown to have the most significant impact when treating this type of scar. Steroid injections are usually given about once a month, but possibly longer, until the desired results are visible. The steroid will cause the keloid to flatten, however, there is a possibility of seeing the colour of the scar darken. Minor loss of fat in the treatment area has been reported, and can take several months to return to normal.

Kenalog for Acne

Kenalog can also be injected directly into acne or pimples at the sign of a breakout, to reduce the infection, redness, and swelling almost immediately*. Kenalog injections are typically used to help only deep cystic acne lesions. While this quick fix is used to tone down inflammation in cases of severe cystic acne or to zap a large pimple before an event, it will only reduce the symptoms and not treat acne at the source – or prevent future breakouts from occurring. For acne, Kenalog injections are not considered to be an effective or long term treatment. Like the treatment of a keloid, it’s especially important when treating acne to follow a holistic approach. Kenalog injections are often used in conjunction with laser acne, light therapy, chemical peels, and a medical grade skincare regimen in order to achieve the best results*.

Kenalog Injections for Hair Loss

Alopecia areata is a very common and distressing hair loss condition that affects both men and women of all ages. The condition most often affects the scalp, beard, or eyebrows; causing patches of hair loss and is attributed to an autoimmune disorder. Despite the hair loss symptoms associated with alopecia, hair regrowth is usually possible. The affected hair follicles are still functional, though awaiting the appropriate signal in order to jumpstart their recovery process. Hair color and texture can also be restored through multiple treatments, and are generally recommended especially if the condition is severe or recurring.

At Q Q Esthetics Laser Clinic in Toronto, we specialize in various treatments for hair loss, including corticosteroid injections or Kenalog, which work to prevent white blood cells from attacking the hair follicles in order to help speed up hair re-growth*. During your private one-on-one medical consultation, one of our skilled cosmetic professionals will be able to assess your concerns and determine the ideal program to help you reach your hair goals.

Tell your doctor about all medications you may be taking. Kenalog Injections should be used during pregnancy only if prescribed. This medication may be harmful to a fetus. Infants born to mothers who have received corticosteroids during pregnancy should be observed for signs of hypoadrenalism. This medication can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Consult with your doctor about whether this medication is right for you, if you are or intend to be breastfeeding.
