Hyperhidrosis Treatment

At Q Esthetics Laser Clinics in the GTA, we have your excessive armpit sweat solution. There are 3 million sweat glands covering the surface of our bodies that act as a natural thermostat, carefully regulated by the hypothalamus gland. Hyperhidrosis is a disorder characterized by excessive sweating which affects more than 2% of the world’s population. The condition of excessive sweating is not life threatening, however it can be deeply life-altering and have devastating and lasting effects on social, professional, and personal lives. The excessive sweating can occur in various parts of the body including the hands, the armpits, and the feet, though the armpits account for roughly 50% of the cases. Some medications may also act as triggers, which include pilocarpine, physostigmine, acetaminophen, aspirin, insulin, niacin, antidepressants, meperidine, tamoxifen, alcohol, opiates, and cocaine. The incidence of hyperhidrosis is noted to be higher in children, teenagers, and younger adults. 25 % of individuals who have reported excessive sweating of the palms or the soles of the feet also have axillary or armpit hyperhidrosis.

Surveys have indicated that the number of hyperhidrosis sufferers in the U.S. is 2.8%. This percentage would represent about 8 million people in the USA and 800,000 in Canada. Of the people surveyed, over 60% reported that they never contacted a health care provider about their problem. Most North Americans would say that they use deodorant or antiperspirant on a daily basis, however, these products are unable to control most cases of Hyperhidrosis. Many people want to find a safe, aluminum free solution that will last for months.

Hyperhidrosis Treatment with Botox Injection

As one of the safest and most medically researched drugs in Canada, Botox® Injection is approved by Health Canada and FDA as a treatment for severe, primary hyperhidrosis of the underarms. Botox® Injections can usually help to reduce excessive sweating of the underarms by blocking the nerve signals which stimulate the sweat glands. Affected sweat glands are unable to receive the chemical signals, and excessive sweating stops. It is true that normal sweating is considered a healthy body function. There is no need to worry that the treatment is unnatural or unhealthy because sweat doesn’t go anywhere or get backed up in the body. Sweat is simply not produced in the areas treated with BOTOX®. It will continue to be produced elsewhere in the body.

What Should I Expect After Hyperhidrosis Treatment?

You are expected to notice that the excessive sweating has reduced by roughly 80% within one month of the first treatment. Often not all sweat glands are reached the first time you have Botox treatment, and you may continue to experience some sweating from untreated areas. Patients typically notice that their clothes are drier shortly after treatment. If you do not see a significant reduction of sweating, you should follow up with the doctor. A recent study by Allergan, the makers of Botox, showed that 84 out of 104 patients treated with BOTOX® (81%) achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating, compared with only 44 out of 108 patients not treated with BOTOX® (41%) Of course, individual results will vary, but Botox treatment for Hyperhidrosis has a very high patient satisfaction rate.

What Is The Hyperhidrosis Treatment Like?

At Q Esthetics, a licensed physician will perform this procedure for you. The procedure is safe and straightforward, and usually takes about one hour to complete. Using a very fine needle, a small volume of medication solution is injected into the affected underarm area. The needle is very fine and is placed just under the skin, so you will experience only minimal discomfort. Effective treatment may require multiple injections based on your doctor’s assessment of the areas needed to be treated.

How Long Does a Hyperhidrosis Treatment Last?

A Recent clinical study conducted by Allergan, the makers of Botox, showed that on average, one treatment for excessive under arm sweating may last for more than 200 days. That is 6.5 months! The Effects can be expected to gradually wear off and the metabolism of this product is unique to each individual; however, Botox effects are not permanent, so at some point another treatment will have to be scheduled in order to maintain your results. You and your doctor will eventually find a schedule that keeps you comfortably dry and maintains effects. The cost of Hyperhidrosis underarm treatment is often covered by health insurance plans, however the makers of Botox also offer a program called BOTOX® Drier Days™ in order to help offset your out-of-pocket costs. Side effects from Botox treatments are rare, but can include minor and temporary bleeding at the injection sites. Avoid any known blood thinners two weeks prior to your treatment such as aspirin, Advil, and Ginseng as well as some other herbal formulas. Botox treatment will not be right for you at this time if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if BOTOX® can harm your unborn baby. This is true as well if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if BOTOX® passes into breast milk.
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
