How much do you know about toenail fungus? Toenail and fingernail fungus are known to affect at least 10% of people in the world. It is a very common problem which has been difficult to treat in the past. It is, in fact, the most common disease of the nails. There are various risk factors that can make a person more likely to develop toenail fungus issues.

Aging is a common risk factor for onychomycosis, or toenail fungus, partly due to diminished blood circulation as we age. Nail fungus tends to affect more men than women as well, and can be associated with a family history of onychomycosis. Some other risk factors may include excessive foot perspiration, psoriasis, going barefoot in public gyms and shower rooms, having diabetes, and leg and foot circulation problems.
Toenail fungus is more common than that of the fingernails, perhaps because the toenails grow more slowly, allowing time for the fungus to accumulate in the nail. The feet are also often covered and can be kept moist in unbreathable shoes or socks, which creates an environment for fungus to thrive. Conversely, people who walk in public places with bare feet, such as on swimming pools decks, may also put themselves at risk of acquiring foot and toenail fungus. The fungus can lead to the toenails growing thick, yellow and discolored. They may also cause pain when you are bearing weight or walking. Downward pressure from closed-toe shoes on the bulky material of the thickened nail puts constant painful pressure on the skin & tissue of the toes. Eventually, the tissue surrounding the affected nails can become sore and inflamed. The nails can disintegrate somewhat if not effectively treated. Now there is hope for nail fungus, with an effective treatment recommended by many podiatrists and dermatologists. At Q Esthetics laser clinics in Toronto, we have a non-surgical, drug-free and painless option which targets and cures the toenail fungus without harming the surrounding tissue.
Fungal nail infections can be very difficult to eliminate because of the challenge of reaching fungi deep underneath the nail. This aspect of the infection makes traditional toenail fungus treatments, such as home remedies, prescription pills and creams, largely unsuccessful. Most onychomycosis treatment patients have spent money and time trying things that were promised would be effective.
Fungal nail infections
Understandably, people who suffer from this condition are willing to try various treatments and medications to remedy it, however, these are often ineffective and may carry risks. For example, the oral drug Lamisil is considered to be generally safe and affordable, however drugs like these have been known to cause liver damage and different side effects. Hepatotoxicity may occur with or without preexisting liver disease. There have been cases of liver failure and even death with the use of Lamisil, in patients with or without preexisting liver disease. There are unfortunately many other possible serious adverse effects as a result of this medication, such as severe skin problems and depression; those of which someone shouldn’t have to suffer through in order to treat their toenail fungus. When nothing else has been effective, some patients will resort to having their toenail surgically removed and the nail bed altered so that the nail cannot grow back.
Toenail fungus is often a cosmetic issue for some, even when it is not yet causing a medical concern. Many people will not notice the nail changes right away and may not even realize anything is wrong when they see subtle changes to nail thickness and colour. If nail fungal infections are not treated promptly and effectively however, they can lead to permanent nail damage as well as serious health problems.
