Unwanted fat is one of the most common cosmetic issues that people struggle with in North America. Many people range from slightly overweight to obese. The diet/fitness industry rakes in huge sums of money each year, promising to help shed pounds and burn off stubborn body fat. When we consume more calories than we are able to burn, we will store this extra energy as fat.

Even a few extra pounds have the potential to increase the chances of high blood pressure, and elevated blood sugar, which can lead to Diabetes. Heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, as well as certain cancers, have all been linked to excess weight. Over 20% of adults in Canada are considered to be obese, and many more are simply overweight – carrying unwanted fat on their bodies. Body mass index, (BMI) is one way to evaluate your weight to height ratio and determine if you are below a healthy weight, at a healthy weight, overweight or obese.
A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal. A person with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 would be overweight, and a BMI of 30 or higher is considered to be obese. Those who find themselves in the normal range, still have what are known as “problem areas” of fat on their bodies, and do not feel confident and happy about their shape and size because of this. Men and women tend to carry fat on their bodies differently. For instance, men usually gain pockets or rolls of fat on their bellies and flanks that are referred to as a “gut”, “beer belly” or “love handles.” A large firm belly that protrudes more commonly represents internal, visceral fat – and can put you at a greater risk for type-2 diabetes and other health problems.
Women tend to carry their extra weight on the buttocks, thighs and abdomen, as well as arms. Women can have internal visceral fat as well – especially after menopause, but the dimply, soft fat of the thighs and bottom are typically subcutaneous, adipose fat, which is very hard to shed through diet and exercise alone. Many people also notice that once they have gained fat on their faces, after weight loss, it remains in the form of a double chin. Submental or double chin fat can also be hereditary, and often people are frustrated that this feature can make them look larger and older than they are. Cellulite is a very common issue. You may have cellulite if you have noticed an, “orange peel” or, “Dimpling” appearance on your legs; if you have impaired circulation, spider veins and bruising, localized fat deposits, heavy legs, and skin contour irregularities such as rippling.
Non-surgical fat removal
Until recently, removing problem areas of stubborn fat from the body required Liposuction surgery, as no non-invasive options were effective, reliable or safe as alternatives. Surgery is still the preferred solution for many, but it is not without inherent risks and scarring associated with all surgical procedures. Another drawback for the surgical liposuction option is that when underlying fat is removed- often the overlying, lax skin will appear saggy and aged as it’s support from underneath is removed. Not everyone has healthy, young, elastic skin; and the potential for retraction of loose skin should always be considered when considering liposuction fat removal.
Non-surgical, non-invasive fat removal options sound like a quick and simple solution, but there are considerations and imitations to know about – as with any cosmetic procedure. These effective alternatives are generally not practiced on significantly overweight and obese patients, nor are they effective for deep, visceral fat that surrounds the internal organs. Ideal candidates for these procedures are usually healthy, have a healthy body weight, and localized problem fat areas to reduce. Laser and ultrasound fat reduction is non-invasive, and typically melts or otherwise destroys fat cells while having the dual benefit of skin tightening, because of collagen stimulation in the tissues.
Fat loss treatment
Liposuction laser treatments, and other cosmetic procedures that target excess fat are designed to sculpt and contour the body, rather than to facilitate significant weight loss.
There are area-specific technologies available for body treatments, as well as injectable medication for one FDA approved specific area – the double chin. Belkyra is currently the only non-surgical injectable treatment indicated for the reduction of fullness under the chin. It is an injectable medication that contains a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid-, the substance naturally found in our digestive system, for breaking down and emulsifying dietary fats. When it is injected into subcutaneous fat, Belkyra causes the permanent destruction of fat cells. Typically 2-3 treatments, separated by 8 weeks, will be required in order to appreciate full dramatic results.
