Causes of Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that develops when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. It most commonly appears on the face, chest, back, and shoulders. When pores become blocked, breakouts may form and can lead to redness, swelling, irritation, and inflammation.

A primary cause of acne is the excessive buildup of cells inside the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface. This blockage can increase oil production and allow bacteria to accumulate, contributing to inflamed or infected blemishes.

Teenage acne is typically caused by hormonal fluctuations during puberty. Acne is not caused by poor hygiene, although dirt and pollutants may worsen clogged pores. More severe or cystic acne is often linked to hormonal and genetic factors.

Adult acne may occur due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, stress, lifestyle factors, certain medications, or birth control use. Many adults continue to experience acne throughout their 20’s, 30’s, and even into their 50’s.

Different Types of Acne

Acne may appear in different forms, including:

Whiteheads (closed comedones)

Blackheads (open comedones)

Pimples (pustules)

Cysts (deep nodules)

Treatment Options

Are you suffering from acne? There’s now an effective procedure recommended by many dermatologists – the cutting-edge Fotona laser system to provide highly effective laser acne treatments. The Fotona’s Nd:YAG laser wavelength is precisely controlled to penetrate the skin safely and effectively, targeting the root causes of acne by reducing overactive sebaceous glands and eliminating acne-causing bacteria. This innovative treatment approach not only addresses current acne but also helps prevent future breakouts by promoting healthy skin regeneration and collagen remodeling.
At Q Esthetics we combine Fotona laser with other acne treatments (such as Chemical Peels, Kenallog Injections and Acne Blue Light Therapy), for best results. Your acne specialist will create a skincare plan for you, and may recommend skin care products to speed up the recovery.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required can vary based on the severity of your acne:
Mild to Moderate Acne: Typically, 3 to 6 sessions are sufficient.
Moderate to Severe Acne: May require 9 sessions or more.
Treatments are generally spaced one to two weeks apart to allow the skin to respond and heal.

When will I see results?

Results from laser acne treatments are gradual and accumulative. The visible improvements will build with each session, with the “final” results becoming apparent only after the last treatment. Patience is key, as the skin needs time to regenerate and heal.

Post acne treatment instructions and tips

Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder caused by several factors which can include hormones, stress and the environment. Thus clearing and controlling acne is an ongoing commitment. Proper skin care is essential, and good hygiene has been shown to improve and maintain acne treatment results.

  • It is important to wash your face with a gentle cleanser (such as pH balanced gel), morning and evening, and after any vigorous activity. You may also use an oil-cleanser prior to your water-based cleanser if you have an oily skin type, or wear makeup frequently.
  • Rinse face with cool or warm water. Do not use hot water as it will activate the oil glands.
  • All cosmetics such as foundation, blush and moisturizers should be oil free, and ideally mineral-based. Products should be non-comedogenic.
  • Avoid frequent handling of the skin, as well as picking, squeezing or touching any lesions.
  • Acne patients with oily hair should shampoo regularly. A shampoo containing salicylic acid may be used 1-3 times per week.
  • If you smoke, quit, as nicotine has been linked to acne.
