Intense Pulsed Light

Intense Pulsed Light, (IPL) therapy is one of the most frequently used light therapy treatments by dermatologists. IPL therapy uses short burst of high intensity light to treat a number of skin conditions, such as birthmarks, brown spots, skin discoloration, nail fungus, melasma, and aging skin.

IPL Treatment

IPL emits a targeted wavelength (between 400 and 1200 nanometres) of light into the skin, using a hand-held flashgun. It works to destroy the targeted area, for example, discolored skin. In response, your skin produces more collagen, repairing the treated area.

Prior to the treatment, a topical numbing cream will be used on the treatment area. This helps to prevent discomfort during the procedure. Individuals may experience a slight stinging, as the laser heats up when skin absorbs the light energy. Since treatments are very short, (15-20 minutes on average) pain and/or discomfort is minimal. It is important afterwards to wear sunscreen and to avoid being in direct sunlight in order to protect the skin, which may be slightly red following the treatment. This redness is temporary, lasting anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

While significant improvement may be seen after only one treatment, typically a few treatments are necessary. In most cases, three to five monthly treatments are recommended. IPL is most effective on lighter skin tones, as darker skin tones may experience hyperpigmentation.

Birthmarks

Birthmarks are common, benign, pigmented skin blemishes, which are present at birth or appear shortly afterward. It is unknown why some people are born with birthmarks while others are not. A birthmark is a congenital irregularity on the skin. Though most birthmarks are benign and do not require any treatment, they are often removed for cosmetic reasons. Many people are understandably self-conscious about visible marks on their face or areas of the body that are visible when clothed.

For birthmark removal at Q Esthetics , we use IPL and Nd:YAG laser, in conjunction with electrocautery, to fade or remove a diverse range of birthmarks. IPL and Laser are usually used for removing flat birthmarks. IPL and laser birthmark removal may require approximately 3-6 sessions to make the birthmark invisible. The pulsed light, or laser beam, is selectively absorbed by the pigment or lesion vessels, which are then destroyed or shed away. Spots tend to become darker at first, as the treated pigment is brought to the skin’s surface where it can be exfoliated.

Fungal Nail

Toenail and fingernail fungus are known to affect at least 10% of people in the world. Although it is a very common problem, it is difficult to treat at home, as it reaches deep underneath the nail. Toenail fungus is more common than that of the fingernails, perhaps because the toenails grow more slowly, allowing time for the fungus to accumulate in the nail. The fungus can make the toenails grow to be thick, yellow and discolored; and can cause pain when you are bearing weight or walking. Downward pressure from closed-toe shoes on the bulky material of the thickened nail puts constant painful pressure on the skin & tissue of the toes. Eventually, the tissue surrounding the affected nails can become sore and inflamed, and the nail can disintegrate somewhat if not effectively treated. However, there is hope for nail fungus, and an effective treatment recommended by many podiatrists and dermatologists. At Q Esthetics laser clinics in Toronto, we have a non-surgical, painless and drug-free option, which targets and cures the toenail fungus without harming the surrounding tissue.

At GTA Q Esthetics Laser Clinics, we use Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, therapy to eradicate toenail fungus. Brown Spots/Skin Discoloration

Brown spots or skin discoloration are often caused by aging. These flat spots on the skin are often a result of frequent sun-exposure, which is why they are referred to as sunspots. As such, they normally develop on areas of the skin that are most frequently exposed to the sun – such as the face, arms, back and hands. This skin discoloration is caused when too much skin pigment, known as melanin, is produced. Since they frequently develop in visible locations, many people search for ways to diminish the appearance of brown spots.

At Q Esthetics, we use IPL therapy to target and reduce the appearance of skin discoloration, helping to improve your appearance and self-esteem. While IPL won’t completely erase brown spots, it can significantly reduce their appearance. The pulsed light heats and works to destroy brown spots, bring pigment to the surface, and allow it to be exfoliated – revealing healthy new skin cells.

What can I expect during and after the treatment?

Melasma/Skin Discoloration
Melasma, also known as chloasma faciei, is a common skin disorder of cutaneous pigmentation stimulated by estrogen. It results in brown patches that typically appear on the face, and which can be very common during pregnancy. Although it does not pose any health risk, it can be cosmetically embarrassing. In addition to laser treatment, in our practice at Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, we have also found that intense pulsed light (IPL) may help to improve melasma of different cutaneous layers. While IPL won’t completely eliminate melasma, it can significantly reduce its appearance. The pulsed light heats and works to destroy the pigment, bringing it to the surface, where it will slough off and be replaced by healthy cells; as your body also produces more collagen in response.

Aging Skin
IPL is used to treat wrinkles. The skin gradually becomes thinner and rougher as we age. Without the supportive connective tissue it once had, the skin loses strength and flexibility; as it begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely. Due to repeated movement of the underlying muscles and the effects of gravity, wrinkles will form in the upper layers of the skin. As you get older, the skin will inevitably become less elastic and more fragile. Decreased production of natural oils dries the skin, and we are less able to retain skin’s moisture. This can cause the skin to develop fine lines, creases, and wrinkles. At Q Esthetics Laser Clinics, we use Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL therapy to reverse the signs of aging. This light-based treatment targets selected areas of the skin, stimulating the production of collagen. As a result, wrinkles will be smoothed-out and your skin will appear younger and tighter.
