Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, also known as the “Toronto Vampire Facial” or “Vampire Facelift”, is a progressive, non-surgical healing treatment which uses a very small amount of a patient’s own blood to regenerate soft tissue and diminish the signs of aging. It is a far more pleasant and simple treatment than the name might suggest. PRP therapy is one of the most common treatments at Q Esthetics.
First, it is important to know a little about what our blood is made of. Science has shown us that the most potent source for healing is often within our own bodies. Platelets are packed with growth and healing factors, which initiate repair where they are placed and attract the assistance of stem cells for powerful cell restoration.
Whole blood is composed of plasma (fluid portion of blood) and formed elements (blood cells and platelets). Plasma is the pale fluid portion of blood, which contains proteins, ions, nutrients, hormones, antibodies, metabolites, enzymes, clotting factors, etc. Plasma makes up about 55% of the whole blood volume, with blood cells and platelets making up about 45%. Platelet-rich plasma therapy, also called PRP therapy or autologous conditioned plasma (ACP) therapy, is designed to take advantage of our blood’s natural healing abilities for repairing damaged cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, or even bone. It has recently been used more often in the medical world with promising results. PRP therapy also has a promising future in the cosmetic industry, as a beauty-boosting and restorative treatment for aging skin.
Because Platelets are known to release growth factors, the potential for restoring damaged and aging skin through the use of PRP therapy is excellent. Q Esthetics is Canada’s leading PRP therapy provider. PRP shows proven results for increasing suppleness and smoothness of the complexion, repairing damaged, wrinkled skin or smoothing fine lines. It can repair age spots and diminish scars. Acne scarring responds very well to PRP therapy treatments.
How PRP therapy work
Many people have heard of PRP therapy as a revolutionary facial treatment recently because celebrities and beauty bloggers can’t stop talking about it. The nickname, Vampire facial, may sound a bit daunting however and many people still don’t know much about what this procedure involves and its benefits. Don’t let the name scare you. During the facial procedure, a very small fraction of blood (20cc to 55cc) is drawn up from the individual patient into a syringe. This is a relatively small amount compared to blood donation for example, which removes 500cc.
The blood is spun in a special centrifuge device in order to separate its components (Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma, and Plasma). The PRP is first separated then activated with a small amount of calcium to allow the release of growth factors from the platelets, which in turn amplifies the healing process. This Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) is then injected into the treatment areas.
The full PRP therapy procedure usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hr. You will see an immediate response; which will subside and then results become more apparent in the weeks following your injection. Generally, 2 to 3 treatments are advised, however, more may be indicated for some individuals. Improvements are usually seen after 6 to 12 weeks, lasting 12 + months. Touch up treatments may be done, a year after the initial group of treatments, to boost and maintain the results.
Benefits of PRP Therapy
PRP therapy is a safe, chemical-free natural alternative to artificial fillers. PRP uses your own blood and there is little risk of allergy or lumps at the location site. The results of PRP continue to improve over time, unlike filler, which diminishes as the filler breaks down.
The procedure is performed in under an hour and with little to no downtime. You may return to work and resume all of your regular, daily activities immediately after your PRP procedure. There may be minor redness or slight bruising in the injection area, however, this typically subsides within a few hours of treatment. Any minor swelling may be relieved with a cold compress or ice pack post procedure. It is recommended that you avoid known blood thinner 2 weeks prior to your procedure in order to reduce your risk of bruising. To enjoy long lasting results, be sure to avoid sun exposure, and use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
