Warts Treatment Toronto
Warts are benign skin growths caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). They are usually skin-colored and appear like bumps, but can also be dark, flat and smooth. Warts can be embarrassing , and occasionally they itch or hurt, particularly the plantar warts.
Wart can be spread from person to person by direct and indirect contact, and spread from one area of the body to another. Persons with weakened immune systems may be more susceptible. Warts are common in children and young people, but rare in adults. About 65% of warts go away on their own within two years.
Main types of warts:
- Common warts Usually appear around the fingernails and on the back of the hands, but can grow anywhere.
- Plantar/Foot warts Usually found on the soles of feet. Plantar warts often grow into the deeper layer of skin due to the pressure from walking and standing. Walking around the public area barefoot increases your risk for developing plantar wart.
- Flat warts Can occur anywhere but be found generally on the face and forehead in men, and on the legs in women. They tend to grow in large numbers.
Wart treatments:
- Over-the-counter medications these liquids, tapes and creams that most often contain salicylic acid are usually used at home. A blister forms on the wart, then dries up and peels off. They are relatively safe, but tend to work very slowly - may take months to work.
- Prescribed medications can be used at home or at a doctor’s office. They remove warts by disrupting or destroying wart’s cells, but they also kill normal cells, so they should be used much more cautiously than salicylic acid, especially with children and pregrant women.
- Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen) freezes warts off. It create a blister between the wart and epidermal layer, after which the wart and surrounding dead skin falls off. Many patients report pain during the procedure. Risks include blistering of normal skin caused by overfreezing, or spreading of the wart caused by underfreezing and contamination.
- Immunotherapy stimulates the immune system to destroy the agent that causes warts. Because some of the substances used for immunotherapy are expensive, dangerous, or still under experiment, immunotherapy is usually considered only after other options have failed.
At Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, we use electrocautery to remove warts (burning warts with light electrical current). Usually local anesthetic is applied to the treated area before the procedure. In a right hand, removing warts with electrocautery can be very safe, effective and efficient.
We also use IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) to get rid of stubborn warts such as plantar warts and periungual warts. As with pulsed dye lasers, the energy delivered by the Palomar Starlux500 system is selectively absorbed by the blood cells of warts. Targeting the wart's blood supply can lead to regression of the lesion. Localized stimulation of the immune system contributed by the pulsed light also plays a great role in elimilating the resistant virus of warts.
