Scar Camouflage & Skin Camouflage Toronto

Scar camouflage or skin camouflage is skin color tattooing that is used to disguise a scar or skin imperfection, thus restoring a more natural appearance*. Scar camouflage helps improve the appearance of scars caused by infections, burns, surgeries, or injuries. The technique can also be used to camouflage skin abnormalities such as vitiligo and hypo-pigmentation, making them less noticeable*. Scar camouflage is often performed after a series of laser scar removal treatments to achieve the best results.

Scar Camouflage is a micro-pigmentation process, using a hand-held device with needles that move over the skin with high-frequency perforations, effectively depositing pigment into the dermis.

Scar camouflage is unsuitable for you if one or more of the following are true:

Your scar is still healing and changing colour. Scar camouflage should only be performed on scars that are at least 9 months old and have stable color.

Your scar is raised or bumpy. Scar camouflage is effective only on scars that are relatively flat and smooth.

Your scar has dark edges. Scar camouflage may increase the hyper-pigmentation in this condition, causing the scar to become more noticeable.

Your scar is a keloid scar. Scar camouflage may worsen the condition in this case.

After a scar camouflage session, the pigment colour may change quite a bit. Therefore, a lighter and thinner amount of pigment is usually applied during the first session and colour adjustments are made accordingly in the following sessions. Usually, at least 3 sessions are required to achieve optimal results. Sessions are usually scheduled 6 to 8 weeks apart to allow the color to stabilize. In some cases, a patch test is performed before the first session to assess the ideal combination of pigments for a specific skin colour.

Local anaesthetic is not recommended because it may change the skin colour, and is typically not required due to the lower pain sensitivity of scarred tissue.

All pigments used in scar camouflage are made of non-toxic natural minerals. At Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, we follow the strictest sanitation and hygiene rules. For your safety, we only use disposable needles.

The treated area will look dark and red right after the scar camouflage, and it takes about 1 to 2 weeks to show a more natural colour. Camouflage tattooing only improves the appearance of your scar - it cannot fully restore your skin to pre-scarring conditions. With this realistic expectation, most patients will be very satisfied with the results*.

After scar camouflage sessions, you should avoid tanning. Camouflaged scars cannot tan, and will look lighter than the surrounding skin. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and use sunscreen whenever you go outside. Alpha-hydroxy creams and Retin-A products should also be kept away from your treated areas since they may cause fading or discolouration of the tattoo. A touch-up is required once every 4 to 6 years depending on the individual's condition.
