Excess Hair

Both men and women are often faced with challenges related to excess body hair on the face and other areas of the body, which may lead them to consider laser hair removal. For women and men, the extra time, money and effort spent to shave or wax unwanted hair often leads to frustration. This can cause many to contemplate the various products, medications or treatments available which may provide a permanent solution.

Excess Hair

Aside from the aesthetic concerns, a dramatic change in body hair growth patterns can also signal an underlying medical condition. It is important to ask a few questions if you have noticed sudden or extreme changes in excess or unwanted hair.
In women, sudden, new excess hair growth, especially in a typically male pattern, may be attributed to an increase in her body’s level of androgens, (male hormones).

The term ‘hirsutism’ refers particularly to this condition of unwanted male-pattern hair growth among women. Hirsutism results in stiff and dark body hair, which usually appears in areas of the body where women do not normally have hair — primarily the face, chest and back.  However, what is considered excessive can vary depending on ethnicity and culture. If the androgen levels are excessively high, other related symptoms might also develop over time. This process is known as virilization. Signs of virilization might include acne flare-ups, an increase in muscle mass, and deepening of the voice. Usually around puberty, a girl’s ovaries begin to produce a mix of female and male sex hormones, which leads to hair growth in the armpits and pubic area. Hirsutism can occur if the mix becomes unbalanced with too high a proportion of male sex hormones (androgens).

Causes of Excess Hair

Polycystic ovary syndrome – This is the leading cause and is caused by an imbalance of sex hormones that can result in irregular periods, obesity, infertility and sometimes multiple cysts on your ovaries.
Cushing’s syndrome – This occurs when the body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol. This may be due to the adrenal glands making too much cortisol or from taking medications such as prednisone over a long period.
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia – This is an inherited condition, which is characterized by abnormal production of steroid hormones, including cortisol and androgen, by the adrenal glands.
Tumors – Rarely, an androgen-secreting tumor in the ovaries or adrenal glands can cause hirsutism.
Medications – Some medications such as danazol, which is used to treat women with endometriosis, systemic corticosteroids and fluoxetine (Prozac) for depression can caused hirsutism.

Excess Hair Treatment

Excess hair like hirsutism can take an emotional toll, as some women feel self-conscious about having unwanted excess body hair and some may even experience depression. Also, even though hirsutism itself doesn’t cause physical complications, the underlying cause of a hormonal imbalance can. Among men, generally the more testosterone, the faster and coarser body and facial hair will grow. Furthermore, men who use bodybuilding steroids also usually experience an increase in hair growth, especially on the back.  It is generally more socially acceptable for men to have visible body hair, however hair can be unwanted in the male population as well and many men seek out ways to reduce overgrown eyebrows, as well as excessively visible hair on the arms, back, neck and other areas.

Depending on the determined cause of the excess hair growth, a doctor may prescribe hormonal treatments. However, whether used in conjunction with hormonal treatments or on their own, there are non-hormonal options such as Laser Hair Removal, which is one of the most commonly performed procedures at Q Esthetics Laser Clinic. This treatment provides optimal results in permanent hair removal for men and women of all skin types.

Razor bumps

Razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae), or razor burn, are small bumps in the skin that develop after shaving. Over time, these bumps may also develop into permanent scar tissue. While shaving, when a hair is cut off at the point where it exits the skin, it may curl back and start growing inwards. These ingrown hairs cause irritation to the hair follicle, which in turn swells into a small red lump that looks similar to a pimple. These inflamed papules or pustules can form especially if the area becomes infected. Razor bumps tend to be especially problematic for those who have naturally coarse or tightly curling thick hair. Certain razor bumps, if left untreated over time, can even cause keloid scarring in the affected area.

There are two variations of razor bumps: extrafollicular and transfollicular.
In extrafollicular bumps, the hair turns around and grows inwards without exiting the skin. Whereas, in transfollicular razor bumps, the hair exits the skin and reenters it, sometimes leaving a small amount of exposed hair.

Since many men shave everyday, making their skin especially sensitive, men are more likely to suffer from more razor bumps than women.
