Melasma

Melasma, also known as chloasma faciei (dermatology), is a disorder of cutaneous pigmentation stimulated by estrogen. Though it does not pose any health risk, it can be cosmetically embarrassing. Q Esthetics is one of the first laser clinics that offer laser melasma treatment in the Greater Toronto Area.

Melasma Quick Facts

Quick Facts About Melasma:

Though the cause of melasma is wholly unknown, some common causative factors include: pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone abnormality, and prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Melasma mainly affects women, although it may occur uncommonly in men.

It usually appears as large brown-grey patches on the face, symmetrically located on the cheeks, lips and forehead, and occasionally found on the neck and arms.

Most melasma patients tend to have olive or dark complexions.

Melasma is more commonly found on individuals who have a previous family history of the condition.

Melasma can be classified into epidermal, dermal, or mixed types based on the distribution of excessive melanin within the cutaneous layers.

Laser Melasma Treatment

Often times, pigmentation issues caused by melasma can be stubborn and quite difficult to treat. In fact, if treated improperly, the condition may worsen. However, several effective melasma treatment options have been available over the years. More recently, fractional laser and PicoSure were approved by the FDA for the melasma treatment.

Here at Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, we also use the Revlite Q-switch laser, intense pulsed light (IPL), chemical peels and microdermabrasion to treat melasma of different cutaneous layers. Click here to see some amazing melasma before after pictures from Q Eshtetics Laser Clinic.

Post-treatment of Melasma

UV radiation is a main factor that aggravates melasma, therefore sunlight protection is essential for melasma patients. At Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, we recommend the Revision Intellishade SPF 45 sunscreen. This revolutionary tinted moisturizer protects the skin from both UVA & UVB rays, dramatically alters skin texture, and improves the overall appearance of the skin.

Protective clothing and hats are also highly recommended. Some melasma patients should discuss alternative options of oral contraceptive with their gynecologists, as it may significantly increase the chance of recurrence.
